Peel United SD2 Vs Leeming Strikers SD2
After a pre-game downpour, the weather stabilised and Peel stepped out against an athletic looking Leeming side, hoping to build on their dominant 1-1 draw with Freo in the previous fixture. Neither team made any headway in the first 30, with Peel seeing the better of the play but limited to some long shots from Declan. Cade and Bodie got through a couple of times but Leeming’s very handy centre back held his lines solidly.
The game took a swing the the 30 mark, with Leeming starting to find their feet in the game a little better. They were pushing a little more at this point, and were rewarded with a goal that can only be described as a carbon copy of last week’s conceded goal. A Peel side looking to push forward to find the first goal were caught by a typical Sunday league hoof over the top at the end of which their striker managed to get a hold of the ball and tuck it in the onion bag.
HT – 0-1
Matty joined the team, promising to snap the legs of any opposition who touches his new $18,000 boots.
If the first half was mildly dominated by the Peel side, the second half was total domination. In fact Leeming didn’t even have a shot at goal in the second half. This in part due to some brave, slightly crazy, but nonetheless brave sweeper-keeper action from Hayden in goals. One period of play led to a corner (that the ref actually awarded for once). Matty swung the corner in (then quickly checked to make sure his shiny new boots weren’t scuffed), and a little bit of penalty area ping pong saw Justin smash the ball home. 1-1. But with both teams assuming normal kick off positions, the referee decided to consult his linesman (who was also a Leeming player). The linesman meekly put his flag to indicated that the ball had swung out then back in, but dropped his flag again. Play continued, goal was scored, but the ref decided to rewind the time and disallow the goal. Back to 0-1.
Peel didn’t have to wait long until the pressure paid off though. A corner in from Zac found Joe, who scythed a vicious left footed volley through the ball, slamming it into the top corner. The Leeming players remonstrated that Jordan pushed the marking defender in the back, which he did, but swings and roundabouts hey.
Peel smelt blood and went for the kill. A push in the last 5 saw Cade slamming the ball against the bar from 25 yards, and various other attempts by the Peel forwards, but the ref blew to end the game, and award Peel SD2 a second successive 1-1 draw.
Writer’s Man of the match: Declan for a committed defensive midfield performance with some calm forward play.
Special mentions: The humourously poor referee, the Neuer-inspired Hayden and Matty’s gleaming sock boots.
